Amber Marshall: “My recent work has been focused on creating utilitarian and decorative objects - simple, but well-designed pieces - to make glass blowing a viable career. I now feel the challenge to start taking my glass in a new direction,” says Marshall. “I enjoy the challenge of the creative process.” Marshall started blowing glass in1998 as a student at SIU-E and became fascinated by it. She immediately changed her major to art (sculpture) and devoted herself to learning as much as possible. She transferred to Illinois State University because of their glass blowing program under Jack Wax, whom she later took a glass-casting workshop from at the Corning Museum of Glass. “I learned a lot through ISU’s great visiting artist program where we got to meet and hear the many glass artists who stopped in. I also learned a lot by observing and working for local artists such as Kae Maehata and Tony Cray, an absolutely invaluable experience,” she relates. In 2005 she took a workshop by Boyd Sugiki at The Glass Furnace in Istanbul. “I wanted to do it for two reasons: to work in a different studio with different people ---which is a huge part of the learning experience and to have an intense period of time completely devoted to learning and fine tuning technical skills. I was looking for a little freedom and inspiration.” At Third Degree, Marshall teaches beginning to intermediate glass blowing as well as conducting the labs for the Washington University College program. “I like teaching for the simplest reason--teaching something I enjoy doing myself.” Marshall’s glass art has been exhibited at Rowhouse Gallery, Regional Art Commission, and Main Street Art Gallery.
