Jessica (Cope) Kopitske:

“Glass itself is magic.  The overall challenge of developing new forms and finding creative and expressive ways of working with glass keeps me in love with it.  I also enjoy the camaraderie in the shop when groups of people are working together on large or complicated projects,” Kopitski says.

Kopitski began blowing glass at Alfred University in 1995.  She initially decided to attend the New York State College of Ceramics because of her infatuation with clay, but after only a few days watching students working in the hot shop at AU she was capitvated by glass as well.

After she got her BFA, she worked at a studio near Seattle, WA for an artist named Kelly McLain where she gained most of her casting experience.

She returned to her midwestern roots and settled back to St. Louis. In 2001 she began teaching computer art and web design classes at the University of Missouri-St. Louis.  Two years later she founded a small ceramic department.

Kopitske continues to divide her time between clay and glass, teaching at UMSL and at Third Degree. While she doesn’t specialize in particular glassblowing technique, she enjoys making sculptural as well as functional works in glass, glass blowing, casting, and solid-working.

She has exhibited her work locally at The Artery, Regional Arts Commission Gallery, Rowhouse Gallery, and the Gallery Visio at UMSL as well as at Prism Gallery in Chicago.

“I love the creativity and enthusiasm of students who are just beginning to work with glass - their constant amazement with the molten material,” she says.  Kopitske teaches the Washington University College classes and the Paperweight Workshops and occasionally teaches a 6-week or intensive glassblowing class.
