Lisa Volner
“As Gallery Assistant, I am responsible for keeping the gallery running smoothly,” says Lisa Volner. Her responsibilities include the daily: displaying glass art, helping to keep the studio neat and tidy, and scheduling classes and furnace time for artists andstudents.
“Hosting special events held in the studio and answering visitor’s glass blowing questions, as well as helping customers select that perfect piece from the gallery are among the unique features of my job,” she adds.
Volner started blowing glass at Third Degree almost two years ago, beginning with Glass I and then immediately signed up for Glass 2. “I've always been a fan of the glass arts, admiring work from art shows and galleries all over the St Louis area. Then, as a gift, I received a Gift Certificate to Glass I. I was instantly hooked and couldn't wait to further my skills in Glass 2.” She uses her glass art to accent her love of interior design and painting and give as gifts for family and friends.
“For me glass blowing is a guilty pleasure. I share furnace time with a close friend once a week and we always have a great time! I would love to have more continuity to my work, but with a busy family it’s sometimes hard to allow myself more time. I truly enjoy the challenges of working with hot glass and look forward to producing larger more defined work.”
Volner describes blowing glass as a delicate balance between being relaxed and becoming completely unhinged. “Some nights I can get three or four pieces in the annealer, and other nights nothing works. The constant is you are always learning something and persistence is key.”
“The best thing about working at Third Degree is the studio isn't like anything else I‘ve ever seen. It’s a working studio with an unpretentious glass gallery. The artists and employees are all naturally creative. I love being able to watch my friends with such amazing ability and skill work during the day. When people visit for the first time they are always impressed and can't wait to return,” says Volner.
